A Full Life (1960) By Sir Brian Horrocks
Brian Horrocks joined the British Army prior to WW1, was called up, and after a few actions was captured by the Germans. He was a prisoner for the whole war, but attempted escape regularly. Since he had missed the war, he volunteered to go to White Russia and fight Communism for the Brits. He was eventually captured by the Red Army and spent more time as a prisoner, but did learn Russian. He attended and taught at the British War College (not the real name). He was given a battalion at the beginning of WW2 and made brigade commander at Dunkirk I believe. He spent a long time training a division in England before being sent to the Desert with Monty. Newbies aren't popular, but he did well in Africa. He began the invasion of Sicily, but was wounded. He rejoined the Army in July of 1944.
