A Yank in Bomber Command (1977) By Robert P. Raymond

This first-hand account of an American volunteer bomber pilot in WWI tells his experiences, describing the sights and sounds, the fear and exhilaration, of 30 operational flights over Germany and Italy. The background is the arrival in England of a young man from Kansas City, his first impressions of wartime England, his training, the strangeness and the camaraderie, and, no less, the romance of his relationship with Betty, the girl he left behind. It is one of the most actual documents of war reportage, based on his diaries and letters woven together into a continuous narrative.
