Backs to the Wall: The heroic story of the people of London during World War II (1970) By Leonard Mosley

London under fire comes to life again in Leonard Mosley's masterly recreation, which skilfully mingles the experiences of influential Londoners such as Churchill, Boothby and C. P. Snow, and 'guests' such as General de Gaulle, with those of ordinary people: a social worker in Notting Hill, a rich young widow, an East End policeman, a firefighter, a conscientious objector, and even a girl detained under the controversial 18b regulations.

He has also made use of the fascinating Mass-Observation reports, in which Londoners said exactly what they thought of the war. The result is a book which reads like a novel, but has the force of truth.
