Japan's Islands Of Mystery (1944) By Willard Price

. In 1919, when the 1483 'islands of mystery' of Micronesia (which includes the Marshalls, Carolines, and Marianas) were ceded to Japan to be administered under League of Nations mandate, there were 300 Japanese in the islands. By 1929 there were 73,028. Meanwhile the native population of these islands steadily declined. Why this is so is one of the problems discussed by the author. That his chief interest was in the flora, fauna and ethnography did not prevent him from casting a strategic eye at the most secretly guarded spots where airfields and naval bases where being covertly prepared. The book is therefore doubly valuable, partly for the light it throws on the problems that were awaiting in the Far Eastern theatre of war; and partly for its graphic pictures of this tropical paradise.
