John Buchan: A Memoir (1985) By William Buchan

A memoir of John Buchan, First Lord Tweedsmuir (1875-1940), distinguished author of such classics as "Greenmantle," and the "Thirty-Nine Steps," and a former Governor-General of Canada. Written by Lord Tweedsmuir's son William Buchan.

John Buchan was a remarkably diverse achiever: writer, lawyer, soldier, politician, scholar and finally, Governor-General of Canada. He was a friend of Roosevelt and of George V, of Henry James and T E Lawrence. Through all his work there runs a thread of simple beliefs - courage, truth, loyalty, honour and compassion. This book shows Buchan as he appeared to his family and close friends, an appealing and intimate portrait whose fame rests - perhaps wrongfully - on his skill as a novelist.
