The Sd. Kfz. 9 prime mover is considered to be one of the most powerful German Army towing vehicles. Between 1939 and 1944 about 2,500 were built by the Fahrzeug- und Motorenwerken (FAMO) motor works in Breslau and used for recovering tanks and transporting heavy artillery. The 8.3 m long monster was powered by a 250 hp engine. The "17 cm Kanone 18" cannon built from 1942 and the "21 cm Morser 18" heavy howitzer built from 1938 were among the main guns used by the German Army artillery. The construction consisted of an upper and a lower carriage with a dual recoil system. In order to bring the gun into the firing position the base plate was lowered and secured by earth spades, the wheels were raised and the limber was disconnected. The maximum range was 28 km and 16.7 km.
