Softly Tread the Brave (1961) By Ivan Southall

A triumph over terror, devilry, and death by mine-disposal officers John Stuart Mould, G.C., G.M. and Hugh Randal Syme, C.G., G.M. and Bar.

This is the story of the exploits of two Australian mine-disposal officers - Commander John Stuart Mould and Lieutenant Hugh Randal Syme - in England during World War Two.

A legendary account of the work of a group of Australian 'Rendering Mines Safe' Officers, amateur yachtsmen who joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and came to UK in October 1940. During officer training at HMS King Alfred they volunteered for RMS work and four were chosen. Such was the demand that they left their course unfinished and went straight for training at HMS Vernon, the RN School of Torpedoes and Mines at Portsmouth, afterwards dealing with numerous land dropped sea-mines in the towns and cities of the United Kingdom, the book relates in graphic detail the incidents to which they were called, the development of the German mining campaign and how they tackled it
