The book was a New York Times bestseller for 5 weeks. It was translated into 22 languages. Since the September 11, 2001 attacks over 1.5 million copies have been sold. The book was used extensively by American analysts and British politicians including Tony Blair and Alastair Campbell in the wake of the attacks.
In the UK it was published under the title Taliban: Islam, Oil and the New Great Game in Central Asia.
