The Great Boer War (1901) By A. Conan Doyle

Arthur Conan Doyle completed the first edition of this work in September 1900, at a time when the British believed the war was over. It continued, however, until 1902 and so Doyle continuously revised and republished the account in 16 revisions with multiple impressions. In this, the final edition, Doyle stated in his preface: "During the course of the war some sixteen editions of this work have appeared, each of which was, I hope, a little more full and accurate than that which preceded it.

Having served as a volunteer doctor in the Langman Field Hospital in Bloemfontein in early 1900, Conan Doyle wrote a pamphlet titled The War in South Africa: Its Cause and Conduct, and also this present volume (dedicated to Langman). He is quoted as believing that this resulted in his knighthood awarded in 1902. It is also significant in being his first work of non-fiction, a branch of his writing that came to be dominated by his later interest in spiritualism.
