The book is lavishly illustrated by photographs (15 in colour, the earlier ones from paintings), engravings, and the artist's excellent drawings and coloured maps, tables on the front endpapers showing average ranges of engagements at sea throughout the ages with little drawings ranging from a pre-history canoe and a Phoenician ram to a 1975 Polaris submarine, and on those at the back a double-page world map showing trade routes and major naval engagements,
