After a career in the Royal Navy, during which he achieved the rank of Commander, Charles Napier Robinson (1849-1936) became a journalist. Between 1895 and 1903, Robinson was the editor of the periodical The Navy and Army Illustrated. This work, published during the Second Boer War (also known as the Boer War or the South African War), was fought between the British Empire and the two Boer Republics from 1899 to 1902.
The book is extensively illustrated with photographs. In addition to British forces, it also includes images of Australian and New Zealand forces.
